Suncheon City, located at the center of the eastern part of the South Jeolla Province and the western part of the South Gyeongsang Province, is bordering with Gokseong to the north, Gwangyang to the east, Hwasun as well as Boseong to the west, and Yeosu to the south. Suncheon is promoted to urban - rural composite city status on May, 1995 with 1 town, 10 subcounties and 13 dongs. It occupies 907.43 square kilometers, taking up 7.52% of the total land surface area of the South Jeollan Province (12,073.46§´), and about 0.91% of Korea (99,393.81§´). Also, it has the population of 270,282 with 94,222 households as of September, 2007.
Suncheon area has a high temperature and humidity oceanic climate in the summer and forms a basin constituted of group of mountains, having a lot of topographical rain. The year average temperature of Suncheon is 12.5 ¨¬C. The average temperature is the highest in August, averaging 25.4 ¨¬C, and the lowest in January averaging -5.3 ¨¬C. The rainfall of Masan is year average approximately 1,487.5mm with half of this falling in between the months of July to September.
Suncheon, situated at the branch of Sobaek Mountain ranges, has earned the prestige as a `Small Gangnam` owing to the scenic beauty, abundant resources, and kind people. Presently, Suncheon is also performing a key role of a transportation center with Namhae Expressway, Honam Expressway, Gyeongjeon Railway, and Yeosu Airport, which provide easy access to the city from all directions in Korea.
With these well-appointed traffic networks, Suncheon is an industrial city where 16,324 numbers of businesses are vigorously expanding the economical activities. Globally renowned enterprises like Hyundai HYSCO in Yulchon Industrial Complex are the main contributors to Suncheon¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, Suncheon¡¯s trade volume reached US$1,490Million with US$471 Million in export and US$1,018 Million in imports.
Especially, with the designation as the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Area (October 30, 2003), one of three newly created Free Economic Zones in South Korea, Suncheon inherited great potential for growth as a hub city of international business in the Northeast Asian region. |
