Mt. Jiri is a branch of the Sobaek Mountains and rises out of the northeast. Eastern Mt. Jiri hosts the second peak, Banyabong, as well as the historical Nogodan. To the north, there is Manbokdae; to the west, Mt. Chonma and Gittdae Peak; and to the south, Mt. Baekun and Hyeongje Peak. Much of the area consists of rugged mountain. Seosi Stream, which originates at Sandong County, flows to the south through the center of Gurye County and later joins the Seomjin River. This river then winds itself throughout the Sobaek range, often through narrow and precipitous parts.
The climate is typical of Northeastern Asian with a temperate monsoon, hot summers, and cold and dry winters. The average temperature is about 13.4¡É with an annual variation of about 25.1, which are markedly high. Average rainfall is about 1,070.8 mm per annual in 2005. Summer brings the most rainfall and seasonal variance is high. Around Nogodan the land is mostly flat especially at the higher altitudes, and this forms the Nogodan plateau which attracts many visitors.
Gurye, at the center of the Jirisan region, is emerging as a top tourist destination and has also been an active aspect of development for the Gwangju Advanced Science Industrial Complex, Yulcheon¤ıYeocheon Industrial Complex and Gwangyang Iron and Steel Company.
Located at the center of a triangular zone created by the intersection of the Honam, Namhae and the 88 Highways, Gurye is easily reached from all the directions.
Mt. Jiri, as the first national state park, it houses some of Korea¡¯s most important temples such as Hwaeomsa Temple, Cheoneunsa Temple and Yeongoksa Temple. The beautiful landscapes are ideal spots for festivals. There are the Sansuyu Flower Festival, the Royal Azaleas Festival and the Piagol Maple Festival.
Not complacent with the current success, Gurye seeks to advance into tourist spot of the highest quality, and develop into a cultural and economic core region in the 21st century. Under these goals, it offers boundless opportunities to explore unrivalled natural gifts such as Mt. Jiri and Seomjin River, as well as experience Buddhist cultural heritages at three of Korea's most famous temples.
